Kathy Casey Makes Home a USMS "Substation"

There is absolutely no one who has attended a USMS National Convention who doesn’t know Kathy Casey, a 1993 Ransom Arthur Award recipient. She shares her home with husband Walt Reid and their homestead could be called a “USMS substation.” As USMS Rule Book editor, Kathy could expect a call at any time and you could count on prompt and courteous answers to most any questions. She and Walt, the USMS Top Ten Chairman, have a well-equipped office with two computers, two desks, and floor to ceiling bookshelves and file cabinets so they can tend to their USMS activities.

Kathy became a member and coach of the Fort Steilacoom Masters Swim Club in 1978. She represents her team on the Pacific Northwest LMSC board. As a board member, Kathy organized and hosted numerous meet banquets, organized and developed developmental meets, edited the WetSet Newsletter, served as board secretary, served as relay chair for regional, national and international meets, co-chaired the meets committee and much more.

Regionally, Kathy developed a meet schedule for regional meets, designed a time card that became commonly used in numerous LMSCs, and published regional policies and minutes. On the national level Kathy co-chaired the ad hoc Rule Book committee with Gail Dummer that produced USMS’s first Rulebook and the next three editions. She served as Oceana Zone Representative and published a well-received newsletter, the “Zone Chatter.” Kathy also served as the USMS Liaison to the USS Adapted Swimming Committee, as a member of the USMS Newsletter Staff, a member of the Championship Committee and a member of the Long Range Planning Committee. Kathy is clearly an individual who genuinely deserves to be honored with the Ransom Arthur Award.

Kathy received the Dorothy Donnelly USMS Service Award in 2006: In 28 years with USMS she has been a local coach, been a part of the PNA Board, served as a national delegate, Zone Chair, and the USMS Rules Committee Chair. Read the Rule Book and you will see her handy work.

Kathy Casey has been swimming Masters since 1978. She also swam for Washington State University on the varsity swim team and on the synchronized swim club. In high school she competed in summer swim league. Kathy coaches high school swimming and diving teams and has coached Masters swimming since 1978.

Kathy is a high school special education teacher. She enjoys training for swimming because it reduces stress and allows her to eat chocolate.
