Herb Kern, Multiple All-American
Enjoys ocean swimming, too
Herb Kern swam at Wauwatosa High School in Wisconsin from 1946 to 1949, at the University of Iowa under Doc Counsilman and Dave Armbruster from 1949 to 1951, at the University of Miami from 1951 to 1953, and at Bainbridge NTC from 1953 to 1955. He has been a member of Gold Coast Masters Swim Team since 1972, just about as long as Masters has existed. He's made Top Ten in every event for a total of 269 times and has been number one 16 times (as of 3/11/97). He's been an All-American every year since he turned 60 and was number one in the world in the 200 fly that year. He works out in the ocean and at the Hall of Fame.
Herb had an exceptional year in 1992 when he aged up to 60. He was number one on the USMS Top Ten list in five of the nine butterfly events thus ensuring that his name would appear on the USMS Masters All American list for 1992. At age 60, his 60-64 age group times were 2:47.40 for the 200-yard fly, 3:16.80 for the 200 short course meter fly, and 32.73, 1:21.34 and 3:11.40 respectively for the 50, 100, and 200 long course meter fly events.
Herb has been honored as a Masters All American swimmer 15 times during the years from 1986 through 2005 (at age 73). Herb lives in Ft. Lauderdale and swims for Gold Coast Masters.
