Remembering Jo Lacy

Jo Lacy, born November 3, 1917 in Harvey, Ill., died Thursday, January 6, 2000 of a severe stroke. Jo was well known in Tucson and Green Valley for her prowess in local, state, national and international competition as a Senior Olympic swimmer. Jo graduated from Thornton Junior College in Harvey, Ill., the University of Illinois (AB, Physical Education), and the University of Arizona (MA, Counseling). She worked in various jobs for the Harvard Crimson newspaper in Cambridge, the U.S. War Department in Boston, teaching in Watseka, Ill., and at Alice Vail Junior High and as Student Counselor at Rincon High School, and as Admissions Officer at James Cook University, Australia.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Lacy; six children, (John, Carol, Salazar, Marian Fellows, Barbara Lacy, Linda Alexander, and Martha Goode); sixteen grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Jo was an active volunteer in the Laubach Literacy Program and assisted with reading skills in various Tucson Public Schools. She was a member of PEO, Catalina United Methodist Church (Homebuilders Sunday School Class). Memorial Services will be held at the Chapel at Catalina United Methodist Church (2700 E. Broadway) at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, January 9. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, that donations be sent to the Laubach Literacy Program care of: Betty Fry, 2806 E. Lester, Tucson AZ, 85716.
