Ups and downs in Masters

John T. Foote was born and grew up in Santa Monica, Calif. At the age of six, he learned to swim in a neighbor's pool where lessons were given. About a year later, he began age group competition at the YMCA and continued to swim throughout high school and the first two years of college at Stanford. He was an All-American in high school.

He began Masters swimming around 1975, when a beach lifeguard friend needed a place to stay for a Rinconada Masters meet. After that, he swam many years with The Olympic Club. Work and family commitments eventually curtailed swimming activities, but he continues to be a registered swimmer with TAM. Masters career highlights include participating in the first International Masters meet in New Zealand and setting a world masters record in the 50 fly at Tokyo.

His past training philosophy was to balance strength and endurance training in the water workouts and to keep swim events as short as possible. His current training is limited to long hot showers. Future goals include retirement, a return to swimming and maintaining my health.

He works as a financial analyst for Chevron Texaco and does volunteer work with a local computer group.
