Hal Onusseit competed in swimming for his high school in Rochester, NY and briefly in college. He returned to the pool in 1965, joining a businessmen’s noontime swim at the local Boy’s Club. Five years later, the results of the first Masters National Championships held in Amarillo, TX, were published in Swimming World magazine, and Hal’s competitive spirit was ignited once again. Hal had a tendency to keep detailed records of what he did in workouts and how fast he swam. When Masters became part of AAU in 1971, Hal was asked to keep records for the organization and was later appointed to the Records and Tabulation committee along with Ted Haartz.

Hal posthumously received the Captain Ransom J. Arthur M.D. Award in 1975 for his volunteer work in establishing and maintaining the Long Course (50 meter) and Short Course (25 yard) National Masters Swimming Records in individual events and relays. His record keeping started with the meet results from the first Masters Championship in Amarillo, TX, in 1970 and included all other reported Masters meets up to his sudden death in the summer of 1974.
