April joined USMS in 1980 and participated while in graduate school at the U of Minnesota. She volunteered to coach and taught swimmers of all levels. After moving to Michigan ~1987, she helped grow a Masters team at the Farmington YMCA. She then moved to Philadelphia and was engaged in masters activities, earning a Community Service Award in 1992 from her club, the Colonials 1776. Back in Michigan in 1995, she joined the Ann Arbor swimming community. She coached youth swimmers, including those with disabilities. Fast forward to 2020 and April was president of Ann Arbor Masters. Using her knowledge from 30 years working in public health, she left no stone unturned to inform members about safety during the early months of COVID-19. She also worked with local facilities to ensure members could have pool time for training.
