Friday: Open Water Challenge

The Open Water swim was contested at the 2010 USMS Summer Nationals being held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Interviews from U.S. Masters Swimmers competing at the event from August 13, 2010.

The swimming here in San Juan culminated Friday with the Open Water Challenge. About 150 swimmers made the 1500 meter loop course in the warm sparkling waters of Laguna del Condado. Women's overall winner Eney Jones and men's overall winner Jeff Erwin talk about their swims and open water swimming in general, and Ft. Lauderdale Aquatics swimmers talk about their unique scholarship program that allowed some of their younger Masters swimmers to travel with them to Puerto Rico. The relaxed atmosphere and music made for a great wrap party.

Thursday: Day Four at Summer Nationals

A Recap of Day 4 at the 2010 USMS Summer Nationals being held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Interviews from U.S. Masters Swimmers competing at the event from August 9-12.

Our last day at the natatorium included the men's 400 free, the 50 breast, the 200 fly, the 50 back and the 100 free. Music and fun filled the air as swimmers swam fast, made new friends, found old ones and enjoyed the friendly hospitality of the local volunteers. More records were broken, but the meet's energy hinged on something more than that for many. As soon as the last heat of the 100 free touched the wall the festivities started. Live music, dancing, roasted pigs Gasolina took over the second floor of the natatorium as teams celebrated their victories and swimmers collected their awards.

A Recap of Day 3 at the 2010 USMS Summer Nationals being held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Interviews from U.S. Masters Swimmers competing at the event from August 9-12.

Day 3 finds swimmers continuing to rock the natatorium. The women's 400 free, the 100 breast, 100 fly, 200 IM, 50 free and 200 back were all contested today, along with medley relays. We spoke with Carolyn Boak who broke world records in the 50 free and 200 IM. We also saw longstanding friendly rivalries resurface between 1952 Olympians Yoshi Oyakawa and Bumpy Jones, as well as former national champion college swimmers David Guthrie and Jon Blank. Competing alongside all these great swimmers are folks like Suzanne Cuda, who never swam competitively until she had raised her family and retired from the Army. These great stories and more will make you wish you were here in San Juan.
