Mel served as the Wyoming LMSC Chair in 1996 and 1997. He attended the USMS Convention during the same time. Mel also spent a number of years living in the Arizona LMSC, primarily in the first decade of the 21^st century. During that time he served as the webmaster. Mel was well known for hosting the Flagstaff Masters Fall Classic, AKA the High-Altitude VO2 Meet.
