Gussie has spent her life as a swimmer and parent of a swimmer dating back to 1968, during the pre-computer and touch pad era. She was very active in AAU swimming serving as National AAU Secretary, President, and Vice-President. She was awarded The Woman of Achievement Award by the St. Louis Sports Commission, USA Swimming with the Outstanding Service Award, AAU National Volunteer Hall of Fame, and Ozark Swimming Hall of Fame. For USMS, she has served as the Ozark LMSA Chair of Registration and Sanctions along with other board positions within USA Track and Field, USA Synchronized Swimming, and Ozark USA Boxing.
