Profiling Tim Broderick
A top Masters swimmer and All-American
A first time honoree as one of SWIM's top Masters, Tim Broderick dominated the freestyle, breaststroke and individual medley events with 15 first-place finishes, and broke world records in ten events from 200 to 1,500 meters. An All-American alumnus of Stanford University, he is currently a trial attorney in private practice in Palo Alto, Calif.
Broderick was most surprised with his one attempt at a long course 200 meter breaststroke. Swimming unshaved at a small meet, he was only about a second off the world record. "I was surprised that I was competitive in the breaststroke." He was also pleased with his shaved 2:22.06 long course 200 IM, but still claims his best event is the 200 free.
Still, as is the case for many Masters at all levels, camaraderie is his source of greatest satisfaction. "Although I enjoy setting new records, my most enjoyable race last year was an open water relay with my Stanford teammate, Julie Hopkins. There is nothing better than a great team effort, and she swam courageously in her first Masters event."
