National Qualifying Times (NQTs) help shape a fast, fair, and exciting racing environment at U.S. Masters Swimming National Championships.

USMS strives to be inclusive and welcome all adult swimmers, even at our national championships. Competitors may enter up to three individual events without meeting the NQTs, or a maximum of six events if they meet the NQTs (i.e., have swum a time equal to or better than the NQTs during the past two years). Exception: Competitors entering some distance events (i.e., 1650-yard/1500-meter freestyle) must meet the NQT.

To create these standards, USMS analyzes the past three years of Top 10 results. NOTE: There are no NQTs for age groups 85+.

For short course yards (SCY), USMS averages the 10th-place time for each event. A conversion factor of 15% for sprint events (50s and 100s) and 10% for middle- and long-distance events (200 and above) is then applied to set a consistent and achievable qualifying standard.

For long course meters (LCM), USMS averages the 5th-place time and adds a conversion factor of 15% for all events.
